10 June 1924 – 10 June 2024: 100th anniversary of Giacomo Matteotti’s murder

The socialist deputy Giacomo Matteotti (1885-1924) had bravely denounced the violent system of power under the fascist government. On 10 June 1924, he was kidnapped by the secret police and his body found two months later.

The period between Matteotti's kidnapping (10 June) and the discovery of his corpse (16 August) marked Luigi Einaudi's definitive switch to opposition, having until recently sided with other liberals in favour of the fascist state. On 6 August 1924, he wrote an article on the front page of the ‘Corriere della Sera’ in which he denounced the guilty silence of financiers and industrialists in the face of fascism's continuous and violent repression of opponents.

A year after the death of the socialist deputy, Einaudi wrote:

“Certamente Matteotti esercitò liberamente il suo diritto di critica sui provvedimenti dei governi avversari e principalmente su quelli del partito oggi al potere. Le sue critiche, le quali furono spesso acerbe e talvolta si indirizzarono anche a convincimenti da me manifestati, appartengono al tipo di quelle le quali trovano la loro naturale soluzione nel pubblico dibattito. […] Matteotti difese sino all'ultimo giorno di sua vita il diritto alla critica; poiché sapeva che l'elevazione delle classi lavoratrici, da lui amate e difese, non poteva conseguirsi con mezzi incapaci a reggere all'urto della critica avversaria”.
